Hitachi introduces new compact excavator with adjustable undercarriage

ZX17U-2.

Hand- and foot-control levers have been repositioned for maximum comfort.

Go where few compacts have gone before — through a narrow 40-inch-wide opening!

Two of the many improvements to the new Zaxis 17U-2 Compact Excavator (upgrade of the Hitachi EX17U) is its adjustable-width tracks and its backfill blade with foldable end sections. Using both features reduces the overall width to a mere 40 inches. When fully extended to over 50 inches, the undercarriage provides excellent stability for operations. And the standard quick coupler/hydraulic attachment package makes the jobsite possibilities almost endless.

Despite the small size of the ZX17U-2, the distinctive qualities operators have come to expect from Hitachi are in place. The controls are sensitive and deft. The operator area is comfortable. Multifunction operations mean the operator can easily execute simultaneous operations such as swinging and traveling. Maintenance is fast and simple.

In addition to the adjustable width feature, the reduced tail-swing ZX17U-2 also boasts improved performance specs, rugged construction, more operator comfort, long service intervals, and better fuel economy.

More Productive
Stable, nimble, and powerful, the ZX17U-2 has faster operating speeds, additional weight, increased hydraulic flow, and more powerful digging forces. Travel speeds have been increased, too. Need more digging depth and reach? Choose the new long-arm/heavy counterweight option, which provides an additional eight inches of both.

Bucket dig forces have increased by 19 percent and arm dig forces 8 percent.

Just because the machine can squeeze in and out of tight spaces doesn’t mean the operator has to. A standard ROPS/FOPS 3-pillar canopy provides a generous opening for easy entry and exit and virtually unobstructed visibility. Pilot controls have been repositioned on the left- and right-hand side of the operator. The new pilot levers are spaced far enough apart for the largest operator and feature wrist rests for added comfort. A factory-installed suspension seat is available.

More Durable
Job-proven Hitachi Compact Excavators have earned a reputation for outstanding reliability. The ZX17U-2 continues this tradition with new durability features, including a redesigned X-frame undercarriage, with sloped X-beams and track frames that shed dirt easily to aid cleanout. The larger diameter drive sprocket and track idler increase durability and reduce the likelihood of a thrown track. It also features a cylinder guard that has been reinforced to improve strength and prevent cylinder damage.
