Hitachi EX1900-5 replaces EX1800-3

Hitachi is proud to introduce to the mining and quarry industries its new EX1900-5. The EX1900-5 is a new series of excavator that replaces the ever-popular EX1800-3 in Hitachi’s mining excavator line-up. The EX1900-5 has taken Hitachi’s strong success with the industry’s leading 180-ton class excavator, the EX1800, and combined it with today’s latest technology. The result is a highly reliable and productive excavator that exceeds the high performance standards already set by Hitachi excavators, in order to meet the mining and quarry industry’s ever-changing needs.

The new EX1900-5 is larger than its predecessor and competition – increasing its size to 409,800 lbs. (185 900 kg) in a loading shovel configuration and 411,200 lbs. (186 500 kg) in a BE-Backhoe configuration. The bucket capacity has increased as well. The loading shovel is equipped standard with a 14.4 yd3 (11.0 m3) rock bucket and a 15.7 yd3 (12.0 m3) general-purpose bucket. The BE (Bulk Excavator) backhoe type configuration can handle a 15.7 yd3 (12.0 m3) bucket as well.

The increase in bucket capacity is not the only reason for the EX1900-5's increased productivity – a new single-engine design has been incorporated into the EX1900-5. The engine, a V12-cylinder, turbocharged, air cooled inter-cooler, supplies 1,025 hp (765 kW) at 1,800 rpm. The engine is supported by local Hitachi dealers, giving the customer a “one-stop” support package for the entire machine.

The increased horsepower and the redesigned hydraulic system are the real reason for the increase in productivity of the new EX1900-5. The hydraulic system on the EX1800-3 was an “Independent Swing” system, where the swing function of the excavator had a separate circuit similar to what the competition is introducing on their new models. Hitachi’s new hydraulic system is a “Swing Priority” system that incorporates a more efficient design of multi-function operations of the hydraulic system by removing the independent circuit and replacing it with a priority circuit for the swing function. This design allows more hydraulic oil flow for front attachment operations, increasing operator controllability and decreasing cycle time.

Not only is the new EX1900-5 more productive, but it is more cost effective in operation. With the reduction of one engine in the design of the unit, the required maintenance items such as oil and air filters have been reduced by half. And with extended oil changes extended to 500-hour intervals, the number of services has also been cut in half. The result is less downtime and money spent on servicing the excavator.

Tracking performance data gives vital clues to a machine's well being. The Hitachi EX1900-5 comes equipped with a data logging unit (DLU) that continuously records the performance of the engine and the hydraulic system. The data can be downloaded onto a laptop in the field for thorough analysis.

The EX1900-5 is an ideal five-pass match with Hitachi’s EH1700 (105 US ton) haul truck.
